TITLE:
Know the equivalent decimal and percentage forms for everyday fractions.

In Maths we have been learning:
  • To convert between fractions, decimals , percentages and vice versa.

Here are the IXL screenshots that show evidence of my learning.

The most challenging part about this unit of learning was the second activity because I didn't know how to convert a percentage to a fraction.

My next learning step in Maths is to apply  this knowledge to help me solve a range of increasingly more complicated maths problems.

Election Writing

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

I would march for National because I believe they have many good reasons and policies, on the other hand Labour’s policies are just empty promises. I have wrote about two good policies that National have promised to do, these include better health care and harsher punishments. For example Justice is an increasing problem for New Zealand and I think they need to have harsher punishments. And health Care needs to be a bit better. These are all things that the National Party have promised to do in there next term in Government. I believe their policy about health and justice will help lots of us people in New Zealand.

National has created a policy to create a new criminal offence for people who contaminate rental properties with meth. National  would create a new criminal offence of ‘wilful contamination’ to punish people who contaminate rental properties with methamphetamine. I believe, this a good policy for the future because people who contaminate rental properties with drugs deserve to have punishment. Furthermore, the consequence will be bad enough to scare people enough to make them think twice about drugs.  Justice is an increasing problem for New Zealand and I strongly think that they need to have harsher punishments.

National has created a policy to Work towards NZ being smokefree by 2025. National would work towards a smokefree New Zealand by 2025 through various initiatives. I believe, this a good policy for the future because smoking isn’t good for anyone and most people think it is disgusting. Furthermore, it can cause cancer and possibly death. Health is an increasing problem for New Zealand and I strongly think that they need to adjust some things.

I am strongly against green and there policy to establish a public prosecutor separate from the police. The Green Party would establish a public prosecutor separate from the police, called an Office of Public Prosecutions. It would be responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in the courts. I believe, this is a horrible policy for the future because it’s the police's job to deal with it,  not an Office of Public Prosecutions. In addition,  it can cause conflict towards the police because the Office of Public Prosecutions could be taking up all the attention. Justice is an increasing problem for New Zealand, but I don’t think this is the answer for the problem.

So there, clearly I am voting for national (when I am at age to vote) because they have lots of  good reasons and policies. National have promised to adjust the health care and stricken the punishments for bad behavior. Overall I would vote for National because they have many good reasons and policies. For Justice and health, and I think they would make New Zealand A better place to be overall. Have you voted yet ?

My next steps are: To use more emotive language.

Key Leadership Role #10 - Distinction

This week in the library it was mostly the same as all the other weeks. Is by being patient with people. Some people don't understand that they can only get out a certain amount of books at a time and they can only reserve one book at a time and this means that you have to explain this to them. But that is all part of being a librarian and I can't wait until next Tuesday. I have shown the CARE values Respect and Active Thinking. I have also shown the leadership trait resilience because I don't give up when people don't understand what you're saying.

Showing Leadership #10 - Distinction

Today we have just been to shirley boys high school for a choir performance. Straight after morning tea we went to the hall foyer and did the roll to make sure that everyone was here, and then we got on the bus and set off to shirley boys high school, when we got there we ate our lunch so  that we weren't hungry during the two hours of singing ahead. After that we went into the hall did a warm up song and practised all of our music festivel songs. I ave shown the CARE value Respect, because I respected the other people leading and doing the practice. I have also shown the leadership trait Active Thinking because I have been and active thinker throughout the practice.

Showing Leadership #9 - Distinction

This week I have shown leadership in another area of the school. Because on Monday, Mr Muller wanted some help setting up the  hall for the assembly so went and help set up the chairs and open some windows. After that I went to the Library and finished some maths in my maths book this was the first maths that I have done actually in my maths book that's not online, I have shown the CARE value Community,  and I have shown the leadership trait Active Thinking. I have also shown the Leadership trait active thinking because I thought he needed some help so I helped.

Key Leadership #9 - Distinction

This week in the library, the same student librarian asked me again, If we could switch days because she had band practice, so I said sure and we swapped. So on Wednesday I went to the Library put  some books away, scanned some books, it was really busy this week, Mrs Ward put on some music she put on the song from Moana and Frozen it was quite funny and cute because all the juniors were singing and dancing I have shown the CARE values Community and Excellence, I have also shown the leadership trait Trustworthy because I didn't say ha ha ha and went and told everyone someone was singing and dancing.

Key Leadership #8 - Distinction

This week in the library me and my partner put the books back on the shelves then we went to scan the books. After the library had closed Mrs Ward had to go help in the office because the lady that was normally there wasn't, while she was there we were aloud to stay in the library, I have shown the CARE values Excellence and Active Thinking, the leadership trait I have shown was Trustworthy because Mrs Ward trusted us enough to leave us in there by ourselves.

Showing Leadership #8 - Distinction

This week on friday we went to te hapua (the local library) to do either coding or robotics we are currently in our last activity, the first activity I did was robotics i am now in coding. I don't enjoy doing either of them because I don't find it interesting. but I still will try my best and collaborate with other people. I have shown the CARE values Community and active thinking, I have also shown the leadership trait active thinking because I still try my best.

Key Leadership Role #8

Another way I have shown the CARE values is in my key leadership role a Librarian. Mrs Ward had a selection of new books in the library that she was thinking about buying, my duty partner and I got to choose some appropriate picture books that Mrs Ward could buy and we also ended up choosing a few chapter books. I have shown the CARE values Excellence and community because I thought of my school community when i was sorting through the books and as a result of that I chose some books that they enjoyed, I have also shown the leadership trait active thinking because I thought of my community.

#7 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

Librarian

This week I have proven to have participated fully in my key leadership role, On Tuesday I issued/return heaps of books and put a lot of books back on the shelves Also another way I have participated fully in my key leadership role is by not just helping in the library on my set day, one monday I was in the library and saw that there were a lot of books that needed to be put back onto the shelves and so I offered to help Mrs Ward and Mrs Griffiths put them back. They seemed like they really appreciated me helping them when I was putting the books away and I also made sure that I put them in the correct place, I have shown the CARE value Excellence.

#7 Showing Leadership - Distinction

Today I have proven to show leadership during lunchtime, I was playing hide and go seek tag with Maddy, Ashley, Brayden Sam, Charlotte and others. But during that time we noticed that Elizabeth from year six asked us if she could play so we said sure.
I have shown the CARE values community and Respect. I have also strongly shown the Oaklands School  Leadership trait Motivational because she plucked up the courage to ask if she could play and a motivated her and told her that she could do it.

#6 Showing Leadership - Distinction

For the last couple of weeks I have been working on my speech, I have wrote it about why all schools should ban fidget spinners, slime and putty, I was really nervous because I am not a very good public speaker, I was doing the speech competition for two reason one is for leadership and the second reason is to challenge myself into doing something I wouldn't usually. Even though I wasn't the person who won I was proud of myself because I knew it took guts to get up there and read your speech aloud, I am a bit disappointed because I did try really hard to write that speech and it seems that it was for nothing. I have shown the CARE value Respect because I respected everyone else's speech, I have shown the leadership trait active thinking because I was being an active thinker when I was writing, rehearsing and performing my speech.

#6 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

Today Ashley and johanna asked us yet again if they could switch day again we were kind and understanding and said sure. On our way to the library we saw some juniors playing in the incorrect areas so me and Charlotte politely told them to play in there own area,  once we got to the library we put some books away then we scanned some books, then I got a bit frustrated because there is was someone that has the book that I am up to in the cherub series and she's not even reading it yet plus it's overdue, so hopefully she will return it soon. I have shown the CARE value Respect because I'm not badgering and asking her every 10 seconds when she's going to return it. I have also shown the leadership trait trustworthy, because I am trustworthy enough that people know that I won't constantly nag them for a book.

#5 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

This week I have shown that I have participated fully in my key leadership is that recently my partner has been away on sport competitions so I had to do more jobs around the library, but this week she was here and we had to take some pictures of matariki and replace them with some of the year fours tiki art work. I have shown the CARE values Excellence and Community. I have also shown the leadership trait trustworthy because Mrs Ward trusted us to not be silly while we were swapping the artwork.

#5 Showing Leadership - Distinction

This week I have shown leadership each Friday when I participate in our school choir I think I have shown leadership because you do not have to join it is optional  While I am at choir I think I join in with the songs and what we are doing and I always make sure that I remember to go each Friday I think I have shown the CARE values Active thinking and Excellence. The leadership trait I have shown is resilience because we have recently been learning how to read music and even though it's hard I don't give up.

#5 Home Learning Challenge - Distinction

C 10. Design your own challenge. My home learning challenge for this week is, use pen and paper to create a creative CARE message.

#4 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

A way I have participated fully in my key leadership role is by not just helping in the library on my set day, one monday I was in the library and saw that there were a lot of books that needed to be put back onto the shelves and so I offered to help Mrs Ward and Mrs Griffiths put them back. They seemed like they really appreciated me helping them when I was putting the books away and I also made sure that I put them in the correct place, I have shown the CARE value Excellence. I have also shown the Leadership trait Active Thinking because I saw that Mrs Griffiths needed some help so I helped her.

#4 Showing Leadership - Distinction

Today the year seven and eight netball and hockey teams went to a sport tournament while the volleyball, touch rugby and soccer stayed at school. That same day everyone that was at school went to technology I am in the subject science today we tested gum we had to find out what sort of gum had the longest lasting taste in total we tested six different types of gum. when we got back to school we had koru games training, after that the teachers needed some help with the chromebook computers so I volunteered to help plug them into charge. I have shown the CARE values Excellence and Community, the leadership trait I have used is trustworthy because my teacher knew that they could depend on someone that would stand up and do it.

#4 Home Learning Challenge - Distinction

  • Both have strong tourism
  • Both gained independence from Britain
  • Both use hydro electric power
  • Both have participated in the summer Olympics since the start of the 20th century
  • the first Egyptian to climb Mt Everest (in 2007) followed the exact same route as Sir Edmund Hillary
                        Differences

  • In Egypt they earn 78.29% less money
  • They use 84.79% less electricity
  • Different languages
  • Egypt has a lower employment rate then NZ
  • Egypt has a way higher population
  • In Egypt they start primary school when they are six and we start primary school at 5

Maths Assessment Task

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers
I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

The escape

A prisoner sits in his cell planning his escape. The prisoner is kept in by 5 laser beams, which operate along a corridor. Each laser is switched off at a specific time interval for just long enough to allow a person to walk through. The time between being switched off for each laser is shown below:

  • Laser One = every 3 minutes
  • Laser Two = every 2 minutes
  • Laser Three = every 5 minutes
  • Laser Four = every 4 minutes
  • Laser Five = every 1 minutes

The guard patrols and checks the prisoner each time all the laser beams are off simultaneously. Because each laser only switches off for a short time the prisoner knows he can only get past one laser at a time. He has to get past the five lasers from 1 to 5 in order. Laser One is at the entrance of the prisoner’s cell and laser Five is at the door to the outside. He also knows that if he spends longer than 4 minutes 12 seconds in the corridor an alarm will go off.

Can the prisoner escape without the alarm in the corridor going off?
Yes

If he can escape, how many minutes should he wait before passing Laser One?
1 minute

How much time will he have after passing Laser Five before the guard raises the alarm? 12 Seconds

#3 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

This week in the Library it was harder because my partner that helps me do the duty each week was away sick which was a shame because that meant that I had to to double what I normally do . one thing that has changed in the library was that every lunch time Mrs Ward play an audio book on the TV so everyone can listen some on the recent books and been pig the pug and peter rabbit. I have shown the CARE values Community Excellence, and the leadership trait that I have used is Active Thinking because I have contributed with other people to make the library a better place for everyone to use.

#3 Showing Leadership - Distinction

This week I have shown leadership when my whanau room 7/8 LM went to te hapua library to do robotics or coding my group did robotics our first activity that we did was playing with bee bots we learnt that a robot it something that obeys you and is something that you program to do. After we had played around with the bee bots we played with Lego robots they are called mind clouds we programmed them to make noise and make pictures appear on its screen they all had names our one was called Jones. #2 Showing Leadership - Distinction

This week at Oaklands school I have shown leadership during fitness we got the choice to do Jump jam in the hall with Mr Muller and Mr Brown or we could do stretching with Mr Ladbrook in the classroom I chose to do jump jam in the hall because I find that stretching is sometimes a bit boring but when your doing jump jam you jumping and moving about, I have shown leadership through this by trying my best and not giving up and not getting distracted when some boys were being silly and mucking around. I have shown the CARE values Excellence and Respect, because I respected the teachers who were trying to get us involved and when they were giving instructions, and Excellence because i was trying my best, I have shown the leadership trait Resilient because I wasn't giving up on what I was trying to do.

#2 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

This week after we ate our lunch we went to the library to do our duty, when we got there we could see that there weren't many books on the trolley to put away which we thought was quite odd, which was right instead of putting a ton of books away we had to sort through all of the picture books and make sure they were all in the write letter, surprisingly it didn't take as long as we thought, because we had a strategy, the strategy was that Charlotte did the bottom shelf and I did the top shelf. I have shown the CARE values Community Excellence, and the leadership trait that I have used is Active Thinking because I have contributed with other people to make the library a better place for everyone to use.

#1 Showing Leadership - Distinction

This week I have shown leadership because, we have a thing called the 40 book challenge that we have to complete by the end of the year, and by the name you can tell that you have to read 40 book from different genres. So far I have read twenty two books. The bests books that I have read so far are the Cherub series. I have shown leadership in this because you do not have to do it but if you don't you will face the consequence.  The CARE values that I have used are Excellence and Active Thinking. The Leadership trait I have used is Resilient because I kept going even if in the middle of the book was boring and didn't give up.

#1 Home Learning Challenge - Distinction

This week my Home Learning challenge was Cantamaths, It is a maths team that represents Oakands school in a maths competition. Here are some of the questions. I have shown the CARE values Active Thinking and Excellence, I have also shown the Leadership Trait Trustworthy because I committed to doing cantamaths and they teachers trusted me to do them.

#1 Key Leadership Role - Distinction

This week in the library me and my partner Charlotte, that I share the duty day with, got to the library and could see that Mrs Ward was not yet there and everyone was it the library cloak bay, so Charlotte and I politely asked them to wait outside because Mrs Ward doesn't like people in there when shes not, once Mrs Ward got there everyone sprinted to the computers, once Charlotte and I got into the library there were so many books to put away that once we had finally finished there was only around ten minutes till the library was going to close, I have shown the CARE values Excellence and Active Thinking, the leadership trait that I have used is Active thinking because we had to put all those books away in specific spots.

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Run

I found this novel ok because it isn't the best book I have ever read, and also it wasn't my type of book.

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose.
    • I can use my growing wide range of academic and content-specific vocabulary to understand texts.

  • Overall I would give this novel a rating of 6/10 and I would / would recommend it to others to read if I was something they would be likely to read because If they probably wouldn't read it they probably wouldn't like it.
